The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will release a pair of cours every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — incorporating more material, rhythm, and timing of the original manga.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime previously took a half-year break that started in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and allow the comic to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes appeared during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with others instead covering more material or additional to compensate for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the art can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in seasons, with a couple maximum releasing each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
