Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt serious questions about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans immediately demanded increased transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Release
However, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet some do not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to launch the attack.
“This is quite rich how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those documents for months only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
However, broader comment on the right was relatively muted after the release, particularly when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to enact a bill mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a full release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that included no previously unseen information.
