The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever a binding element keeping it intact in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, only for him admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Reports that he could resign were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.
Lazio became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining initial five matches, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or imploding.
The Youngster's Surprising Presence
A single player remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio during this campaign. He was on last season at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were pushing for him to remain there for another season. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.
He joined initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, almost all of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."
Finding His True Position
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to work out the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
